Who is the Champion of Personal Style?: A Comparison of Clothing Subscription Services

Unless you have been living off the grid, you are probably aware that internet shopping is a big thing these days. Companies are taking things one step further by selling curated collections of fashions that are available as a subscription service. Stitch Fix is the biggest in the clothing subscription space, but is it the best?

The Subscription Format

There are a couple of variations, but most services seem to work using the same format. Stitch Fix and MM.LaFleur gathers information from the customer then creates a curated box of items that’s shipped out. The customer has set time limit (usually a few days after delivery) to try on the garments and decide what to buy and what to return. The unwanted items are shipped back, and the customer is charged accordingly.

Le Tote is a little different. The service starts the same, by asking for style and fit information, then shipping out a “tote” of items. The customer can wear the items then return them when they are ready to receive a new tote. The items are a rental rather than a purchase.

The Price of Subscription Clothing

Depending on how much you usually spend on clothing, services like Stitch Fix may be a good way to try new things without overspending. There is a base fee for using each service.

Stitch FixStitch Fix charges customers a $20 styling fee for each box that is sent. If the customer decides to buy one or more items from their box, then the fee is refunded. There are options in the styling quiz to choose a price range for each type of garment, which can help the customer stay within budget. Stitch Fix’s FAQ states that the average price point for items is around $55. Customers can also take advantage of a 25% discount when buying all five items from a delivery.

MM.LaFleurMM.LaFleur sends the first box for free but charges $25 for every box after. The website states that individual garment prices range from $110 to $325, with each box containing four to six items. If the customer decides to keep one or more items, then the $25 fee is applied to the purchase price.

Le ToteLe Tote charges a monthly subscription fee to use its services. The price varies based on the type of box and number of items chosen. The Classic Box costs $59 for three garments and two accessories or the same price for four garments only. A $39 option is available and includes two garments and one accessory. A Maternity Box is also offered and costs $69 for three garments and two accessories or $49 for two garments and one accessory. Customers should note that items must be returned, so the fee is not the purchase price but the cost of item rental.

Who Offers the Best Subscription for Your Personal Style?

Many online clothing shoppers are looking for something to enhance their personal style. Le Tote has a nice selection, and customers have the option of customizing each shipment. The downside is that these are not items you own and will have to be shipped back. In the end, you may wind up spending over $500 a year on items you don’t get to keep.

MM.LaFleur offers beautiful garments, but they can get pricey if you are on a budget. If you like something in your box, chances are you will be paying over $100 to keep it. The company focuses on business attire, which means there’s nothing available when it comes to casual wear.

Stitch Fix was created with personal style in mind. The service provides access to a diverse collection of garments that are versatile. These are the practical items you can wear while running errands, going to dinner, or doing whatever you love to do. Some are even dressy enough for a professional environment. You have the option of buying, which means you can keep the ones you love. Stitch Fix is the clear winner when it comes to personal style.

Find the Best Online Stylist for You

It’s important to find an online stylist service that is affordable, customizable and offers the type of clothing you need. If you don’t mind giving it back, Le Tote can help keep your closet from overflowing. MM.LaFleur is a good choice for business attire but does nothing for women looking for casual garments. Stitch Fix offers a great balance with gorgeous clothing at fair prices that you can wear every day.
