How Shopping with Instacart Has Helped Me Pay Off Debt On My Terms

What I Did With My Earnings From Instacart

If there’s anything I have learned about being a mom of four, it’s that our schedules are really busy and that kids are really expensive. My calendar day to day is never the same, and it can be really hard to have a typical job when your availability is not consistent. Given the current economy, earning extra income has become more imperative than ever before for us because my husband and I do not want to have any debt, whatsoever. Instacart has been absolutely instrumental in helping me earn extra income to pay off my student loans, our car loan and credit cards!

I remember when my kids were babies, and I had to work a job late at night in order to make ends meet and it was so, so hard on my family. My husband was serving in the Air Force and would work from dawn to dusk and I would work dusk to the middle of the night – not exactly conducive to a family life! But if we wanted to pay off our debts, and not live paycheck to paycheck on newly enlisted military pay forever, we had to do what we had to do to make it work. Ever since then, I have always been on the lookout for ways to earn income that don’t require me to miss time with my husband and children.

When my sister in law told me that she started shopping with Instacart and that she could work whenever she wanted, wherever she wanted, for however many hours she wanted – it honestly sounded too good to be true. I signed up to be an Instacart shopper based solely on her experience, and from my very first shopping experience, I was pleasantly shocked at how simple and convenient the work actually is!

Why Instacart Was A Great Gig For Me

Whenever a new shopping request loads into the shopper app, I can pick and choose whether I want to take it. I’ve had shopping requests at all hours of the day, and even though I prefer to shop while my kids are at school I could see how requests super early or late in the day would be convenient for shoppers on different time schedules than I am.

Not only can I pick my shopping batches based on the time, but I can even decide whether the amount I could potentially earn is something I am interested in, too. Instacart customers are automatically charged a certain amount based on the size of their order and the distance I would have to drive for delivery, and they can add tips before shoppers accept the job. The perk to deciding the size of the order is I control how much time I am spending on a shopping trip and how much I earn. I know that if I want to earn more, I either need to take on a lot of smaller trips or I can do fewer large deliveries. The choice is entirely up to me!

Since starting work as an Instacart shopper, it has relieved a lot of stress on my shoulders to pay our debt off more quickly. Anyone who has ever had debt looming over their lives like a dark cloud knows how stressful and depressing it can be, and Instacart has been a bright light on our journey to becoming debt free. And I have never had to miss a band concert, a football game or had to decide between spending time with my husband and earning some extra cash. Win-win!
