5 Netflix Original TV Shows You Should Watch Right Now

We’ve all been there: stuck in front of our TV or computer trying to decide what to watch on Netflix. Should we stick to the same series we’ve been watching for the past month? Should we watch a movie? Should we try something new?

Over the past few years, Netflix has been taking over the home entertainment scene, changing the way we think about traditional movies and television. With Netflix original shows, you don’t have to wait an entire week to watch the next episode of your favorite TV show – you can binge the whole thing at once! There are dozens of original TV shows on Netflix, which makes picking only one to watch hard, so we’ve chosen some of our current favorites to help you out.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Length: 1 season, 2 parts, 20 episodes

Based on the Archie comic book series, this TV show follows the teenage witch Sabrina Spellman as she tries to navigate her life as half-mortal, half-witch. Set in the town of Greendale, the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina starts up right before Sabrina’s sixteenth birthday, the coming of age for a witch. From there, all hell breaks loose (literally), as she’s forced to confront the darker parts of her family’s past and protect her family and friends in the process. It’s a different take on the story than Sabrina the Teenage Witch, with darker undertones and more satanic influence. We love this show because it’s cute, culty, and scary, but especially because it’s constantly being updated! The series first aired with eight episodes in October 2018, and has already had another 8 episodes released in April. Netflix has also announced it will be producing a second season, split up into 2, 8-episode increments, set to air sometime later this year

Dead To Me

Length: 1 season, 10 episodes

Recently released on Netflix, Dead to Me explores the (darkly) humorous sides of death, grief, loss, and forgiveness through the lives of two women: Jen and Judy. Jen is a no-nonsense realtor from Brooklyn who just lost her husband; Judy is a sweet, free-spirit whose suffered multiple losses of her own. The two women bond over these losses (and lots of wine), becoming unlikely friends, but Judy has a dark secret that could ruin it all. If you like dark comedies with a cute side, or TV shows set in California, this show is a good way to escape reality for a while and discover the twisted, funny lives of two women trying to figure out life and death in California. As of now there’s only one season of ten episodes, but Netflix might renew the show for another season in the future!

The Umbrella Academy

Length: 1 season, 10 episodes

Another TV show on the end of the world…and how to prevent it. The Umbrella Academy is based off of comics and graphic novels created by Gerard Way, the lead singer of My Chemical Romance. In this show, we’re introduced to a family of seven adopted superhumans, all of them born on the same day in 1989 to women who weren’t pregnant the day before. When their billionaire adopted father dies, the seven siblings reunite to solve his murder, and end up in a race to save the world from imminent destruction. The show explores sexuality, dysfunctional families, and more, and has an absolutely rocking soundtrack. It’s great if you like TV shows about superheroes, action, or just Netflix originals in general. Right now the show has one season and ten episodes, but it’s bound to be renewed (because it ended on a cliffhanger..but no spoilers).

Stranger Things

Length: 2 season, 17 episodes

With two seasons out and another on the way (July 4th!!), Stranger Things is a throwback, PG horror/sci-fi that’s reminiscent of Steven Spielberg’s movies in the early 80’s. The series starts with Will, who is captured by a Thing-like creature and trapped in another underground, other-dimension world. While his mother and the town sheriff look for him, his cute, dorky group of friends set out on their own mission to find him, befriending a telepathic girl, Eleven, in their mission to do so. As the two groups search for Will, they uncover a series of terrifying secrets, including government experiments, supernatural forces, and other worlds. The series is more than just a sci-fi/horror show, and also highlights the struggles of growing up in a strange world that always seems to be out to get you, championing the importance of bravery, trust, and love.

Russian Doll

Length: 1 season, 8 episodes

Another recently released Netflix original show, Russian Doll is a comedy-drama series with a side of supernatural. The main character, Nadia, is on her way to be the guest of honor at a party in New York when things suddenly go wrong. From here, the show takes on a Groundhog Day-like spin, as Nadia is forced to relive the last day of her life over and over, dying each night only to wake up alive again in the morning. Nadia is played by Natasha Lyonne, who also co-created the show with Amy Poehler. It’s a great choice for fans of Groundhog Day and other dark comedies.

Overview

These five Netflix original shows explore a lot of different themes, covering the genres of science fiction, horror, fantasy, comedy, and more. What we especially love about them is their ability to touch the humanity within us, regardless of what genre they are. While these are five of our favorite Netflix original shows, we picked them primarily because of the fact that they were released recently, or have seasons that will be released soon. There are so many great Netflix TV shows out there which makes it hard to choose what to watch; we hope this list inspired you to pop some popcorn and get watching!
